Check current rules with the FTA

This guide reflects UAE VAT law and FTA guidance as of October 2026. Requirements for accounting software, record keeping and e-invoicing are set by the FTA and Ministry of Finance and can change; confirm the current position on tax.gov.ae.

UAE VAT law doesn’t force you to use a particular accounting package — but it does set firm rules for the invoices you issue, the records you keep and the reports you must be able to produce. “VAT-compliant accounting software” simply means software that handles those rules for you, so your VAT 201 return and any FTA audit are backed by clean data.

Here is what that means in practice, and a checklist to compare software before you choose.

The VAT basics your software must handle

RuleWhat it means for your software
Standard rate 5%; zero-rated and exempt suppliesCorrect tax codes on every sale and purchase line
Mandatory registration above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies (voluntary from AED 187,500)Tracks your rolling 12-month taxable turnover
VAT returns quarterly or monthly, due by the 28th day after the period endsProduces the VAT 201 figures box by box
Amounts reported in AEDConverts foreign-currency invoices at the right exchange rate
Reverse charge on imported services and goodsRecords both output and input VAT automatically

1. Tax invoices that meet FTA requirements

A full tax invoice must show, among other things: the words “Tax Invoice”, your name, address and TRN, a sequential invoice number, the issue date and date of supply, the customer’s details (and TRN where they are registered), a description of the goods or services, the VAT rate and the VAT amount in AED. Good software builds these fields into every invoice and blocks you from skipping them. It should also issue tax credit notes correctly, linked to the original invoice.

2. The FTA Audit File (FAF)

During a VAT audit the FTA can ask for an FTA Audit File — a standard export of your transactions in the format the FTA specifies. Software that can generate the FAF saves days of work when an audit letter arrives, and is one of the clearest signs that a system was built with UAE VAT in mind.

3. Records you can’t quietly change

The FTA expects records that show what really happened. Look for:

4. FTA-accredited software and the Tax Accounting Software Register

The FTA runs an accreditation scheme: software that meets its technical criteria can be listed on the Tax Accounting Software Register (TASR). Using listed software is not compulsory for businesses, but the criteria are a useful benchmark — they cover producing the VAT return and FAF, compliant invoices and credit notes, access controls, protection against editing posted entries, data validation, and backup and restore. If a vendor says it is “FTA approved”, check the current register on tax.gov.ae.

5. Ready for e-invoicing in 2027

VAT compliance is about to change. The UAE’s mandatory e-invoicing system goes live for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more on 1 January 2027 and for other businesses on 1 July 2027. Invoices will be exchanged in a structured format (based on the Peppol PINT standard) through FTA-accredited service providers. Choose software that stores invoice data in a structured way today, so connecting to a service provider is a setting, not a migration. See our UAE e-invoicing guide.

6. Built for the rest of the GCC if you grow

If you sell into Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman or Qatar, each has its own VAT (or upcoming VAT) rules and, in Saudi Arabia’s case, an established e-invoicing regime. Software that handles multiple GCC tax setups avoids running separate systems per country.

VAT-Compliant Software FAQs

No. UAE VAT law does not require a specific accounting package, but your records, invoices and reports must meet FTA requirements. Software listed on the FTA's Tax Accounting Software Register meets the FTA's technical criteria.

The FTA Audit File is a standard export of your accounting and VAT transactions in a format specified by the Federal Tax Authority. The FTA can request it during a VAT audit.

A full tax invoice must include the words 'Tax Invoice', the supplier's name, address and TRN, a sequential number, the date of issue and supply, customer details, a description of the supply, the VAT rate and the VAT amount in AED, among other details.

VAT records must generally be kept for at least five years, and longer for records relating to real estate.

Yes, if you are VAT registered. Mandatory e-invoicing starts on 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more and on 1 July 2027 for other businesses, using FTA-accredited service providers.
