Searching for the best accounting software in the UAE gives you dozens of options, and most of them say they are “FTA compliant”. That label covers a lot of ground. Some products were built around UAE VAT, corporate tax and WPS from the start; others are global products with a UAE tax rate added on. This guide covers what to check before you choose, so you can compare any product on the same terms.
The FTA does not certify or approve accounting software. When a vendor says its product is “FTA approved”, ask exactly which outputs it produces, such as tax invoices, the VAT 201 return and the FTA Audit File, and test them with your own data.
Most options fall into one of four groups. Each has a place; the question is which one fits how your business runs today and where it will be in two years.
| Type | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheets | Very early-stage businesses with a handful of transactions | No audit trail, manual VAT working, no FTA Audit File, and not suitable for e-invoicing |
| Desktop / locally installed software | Businesses that already have an accountant trained on the product | Single-machine data, manual backups, add-ons needed for payroll or corporate tax, and harder remote access |
| Global cloud accounting platforms | Businesses trading across many countries with simple UAE needs | UAE features such as WPS, corporate tax and the FTA Audit File often missing or provided through third-party add-ons |
| UAE-built cloud platforms | Businesses that want VAT, corporate tax and payroll in one place | Check how well they handle multi-currency and non-UAE entities if you have them |
VAT is where most UAE businesses feel the difference first. Ask to see each of these working, not just listed on a features page:
Every sale and purchase feeds the VAT 201 automatically.
UAE corporate tax turned year-end into a tax computation, not just a set of accounts. Good software should take you from the ledger to the CT return without a separate spreadsheet:
If you have employees on the UAE Wage Protection System, payroll software that cannot produce a SIF file sends you back to spreadsheets every month. Check that:
If you also manage attendance, leave, rotas or recruitment, check whether payroll reads from a proper HRMS or from figures typed in each month.
The UAE is moving to mandatory e-invoicing over the Peppol network. Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more are scheduled to go live on 1 January 2027 and all other businesses on 1 July 2027, with an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) appointed months earlier. Software bought today should have a clear plan for producing structured e-invoices and connecting to an ASP. Ask the vendor directly what that plan is and when it ships.
Once your phase is live, an emailed PDF is no longer a valid tax invoice for B2B supplies. If a product only produces PDFs and has no e-invoicing plan, you will have to switch again soon. Read our UAE e-invoicing guide for the full timeline.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| AED as the base currency, with multi-currency | Correct FX gains and losses when you buy or sell in USD, EUR or other currencies |
| Bank reconciliation with UAE banks | Statement import and matching is where most bookkeeping time goes |
| Bilingual (Arabic / English) invoices | Often requested by government and larger local customers |
| Record retention | VAT records must be kept for at least 5 years and corporate tax records for 7 |
| User roles and audit trail | Lets your external accountant or auditor work without full access |
| Total cost, including add-ons | Separate payroll, CT or e-invoicing subscriptions add up quickly |
The cost of new accounting software is rarely the subscription. It is getting opening balances, open invoices and employee records across without breaking a VAT return. Ask any vendor:
Moving systems mid-period means splitting one VAT return across two systems. Plan the cut-over for the first day of a new VAT quarter, and if you run payroll, the start of a pay cycle.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it produce the VAT 201 box by box, including emirate split? | Avoids re-working figures before filing on EmaraTax |
| Can it export the FTA Audit File? | The FTA can request it during an audit |
| Is corporate tax built in, including SBR and QFZP? | Avoids a separate year-end tax spreadsheet |
| Does payroll generate the WPS SIF file? | Removes monthly manual reformatting |
| What is the e-invoicing and ASP plan? | The 2027 mandate applies to all VAT-registered businesses |
| What does migration involve, and who does it? | The real cost of switching is time, not price |
ETaxFlow is a UAE-built cloud platform. VAT returns, corporate tax computation, WPS payroll with SIF files and AI invoice extraction all run on one ledger with AED as the base currency. It is designed for SMEs and free zone companies that would otherwise run accounting, payroll and tax in separate tools.
Start a free 3-day trial and run through a VAT period.
Check that it produces compliant tax invoices, the VAT 201 return box by box and the FTA Audit File, handles corporate tax including Small Business Relief, runs WPS payroll with SIF files if you have employees, and has a clear plan for the 2027 e-invoicing mandate.
The FTA does not certify or approve accounting software. Instead, check that the software produces the outputs the FTA requires, such as tax invoices with all mandatory fields, the VAT 201 return and the FTA Audit File.
It is possible for very small businesses, but spreadsheets give no audit trail, cannot export the FTA Audit File and will not meet the e-invoicing mandate once it applies to your business.
Not necessarily. Some platforms include WPS payroll and corporate tax alongside accounting, which avoids reconciling separate systems and paying for several subscriptions.
At the start of a new VAT period, so that one VAT return is not split across two systems. If you run payroll, align the switch with the start of a pay cycle as well.
